What is Chitosan & How Can it Lower Cholesterol?

Chitosan is a dietary supplement derived from chitin, a substance found in the exoskeletons of shellfish like prawns and crabs. Researchers have found that chitosan has the capacity to lower a person's choilesterol levels, naturally. There are several mechanisms through which chitosan may help reduce cholesterol.
Binding Dietary Fat
Chitosan has the ability to bind to dietary fat in the digestive tract, forming a gel-like substance that prevents the absorption of fat molecules. By reducing the absorption of dietary fat, it may indirectly lower cholesterol levels, as cholesterol is a type of lipid found in fatty foods.
Reducing LDL Cholesterol Absorption
Chitosan may also bind to bile acids, which are necessary for the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. By binding to bile acids, chitosan can interfere with the absorption of cholesterol, particularly LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol.
Increasing Excretion of Cholesterol
Some studies suggest that chitosan may increase the excretion of cholesterol from the body by binding to it and facilitating its removal through the digestive system, thus reducing overall cholesterol levels.
Modulating Gut Microbiota
Emerging research indicates that chitosan may have prebiotic effects, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy balance of gut microbiota has been linked to improved lipid metabolism and lower cholesterol levels.
Antioxidant Properties
Chitosan possesses antioxidant properties, which may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with higher cholesterol levels, so reducing inflammation may indirectly contribute to lower cholesterol levels.
It's important to note that while chitosan shows promise as a natural cholesterol-lowering agent, its effectiveness can vary among individuals, and more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and efficacy. Additionally, chitosan supplements may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with shellfish allergies.
